Do I Have the Guts to Let My Hair Go Grey?

I’ll admit it.

Every time I see a woman confidently rocking her silver hair, I think the same thing:

“She looks amazing.”

Elegant. Sophisticated. Authentic. Like she has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone.

And then I catch a glimpse of my own roots growing in and immediately reach for my colorist’s phone number.

Apparently admiring grey hair and actually growing grey hair are two very different things.

At 60-something, I’ve started asking myself a question I never thought I’d consider:

Do I have the guts to let my hair go grey?

Notice I didn’t ask whether grey hair is attractive.

I already know it can be.

The real question is whether I’m ready for what grey hair represents.

Because this conversation isn’t really about hair.

It’s about aging.

It’s about identity.

It’s about deciding who we’re trying to impress—and why.

She looks amazing

The Great Grey Debate

Women seem to fall into two camps.

The first group proudly embraces their silver strands and views it as freedom. No more appointments every four weeks. No more worrying about roots. No more pretending they’re 35.

The second group says, “Pass me the highlights.”

They love their color. It makes them feel vibrant, polished, and more like themselves.

And honestly?

I understand both perspectives.

Some days I think growing grey sounds liberating.

Other days I think, “If a little bottle of color makes me feel fabulous, what’s the problem?”

What Am I Really Afraid Of?

When I dig a little deeper, I realize my hesitation isn’t actually about grey hair.

It’s about what I fear people will assume.

Will they think I’m older?

Less relevant?

Less attractive?

Less energetic?

It’s funny when you say it out loud because none of those assumptions are true.

I’ve met women in their seventies with silver hair who have more style, confidence, and vitality than people half their age.

And I’ve met women with perfectly colored hair who feel completely invisible.

Hair color doesn’t determine confidence.

Confidence determines confidence.

Maybe It’s Not An Either-Or Decision

What if the answer isn’t choosing a side?

What if we stop treating grey hair like a moral decision?

You’re not more enlightened because you go grey.

You’re not more vain because you don’t.

Maybe the goal isn’t proving anything.

Maybe the goal is simply asking:

What makes me feel most like me?

If that’s silver hair, wonderful.

If it’s balayage, highlights, or a box of color from the drugstore, that’s wonderful too.

The Bigger Lesson

One of the best things about getting older is that we slowly start giving ourselves permission.

Permission to wear what we like.

Permission to say no.

Permission to stop apologizing.

Permission to define beauty on our own terms.

Maybe grey hair is just another version of that.

Not a surrender.

Not “letting ourselves go.”

But deciding we get to choose what feels right.

So…Do I Have the Guts?

Honestly?

I don’t know yet.

Some days I think yes.

Some days I schedule a color appointment.

But I do know this:

The older I get, the less interested I am in following someone else’s rules about what women should look like.

Grey hair isn’t the question.

The question is whether we’re brave enough to be ourselves.

And that, my friends, is a much more interesting conversation.
